The Winter Table Masterclass

The Art of Tablescaping
with OAK LANE & Co. and Natasha Morgan

There is a reason the still-life painters loved winter.
Bare branches and lichen, a fall of old linen, candlelight catching the dull gleam of silver, fruit and foliage built into abundance against the dark — the Dutch Masters made whole worlds on a tabletop, in the season with the least to work with. The Winter Table is an invitation to do the same.

For the first time in three years, Natasha Morgan returns to OAK LANE & Co. in Kyneton to gather a small group around the art of the winter table — the tablescaping, styling and seasonal storytelling she has spent a lifetime refining, first staged years ago as a Dutch master-esque still life at Oak & Monkey Puzzle, and brought now into Carla and Simon's extraordinary world on Piper Street.

For one morning, their entire shop is yours. This is the rare part. Carla and Simon are opening the whole of OAK LANE & Co. to you as your styling library — two heritage rooms of antique furniture, vintage linen, silver, ceramics, glass and objects imbued with the stories of time. You will handle and hold them, gather and arrange, build a tablescape, pull it apart and build it again, fully immersed in the collection as though the shop were your own home. To it Natasha brings winter's own materials: lichen-crusted branches, moss, hellebores and the quiet botanicals she forages from the secret country lanes and forested places of the Central Highlands.

Together, Natasha, Carla and Simon share what sits beneath a beautiful table — how to source with an eye, read a season, compose a still life, and turn an ordinary gathering into something people remember.

Jeremy Valentine – Garden Creator, The Stones; Retailer/Collector, Shag Vintage

Jeremy and Grant Francis’ garden ‘The Stones’ is an ever-evolving tough-climate garden created around an 1850s stone farmhouse. With much trial and error across the seasons, ‘The Stones’ has gradually mellowed into its unpretentious surroundings and is well-suited to the unspoiled history of the property.

Additionally, with a long history as a collector, wearer and retailer of vintage attire at Shag, Jeremy has often found inspiration in a diverse range of places, from old family photos, to comic strips and fashion subcultures

Jess Cameron-Wootten – Cordwainer and Leather Craftsman, Wootten

The memory of sitting in the corner of his father’s tiny studio as a young boy and marvelling at the care his father took as he crafted shoes from scratch is one that pathed the way for Jess’ eventual continuation of the tradition. Wootten has become the very definition of making high-quality footwear. Today their made-to-order boots, bags and other accessories are handmade in Ballarat in the time-honoured tradition to create individual style.

Additionally, Jess and his wife Krystina have restored a miner’s cottage in Gordon with their own hands. As featured recently on ABC TV’s ‘Restoration Australia’, the renewal of the cottage highlighted their commitment to quality, ingenuity and resolve to breathe new life into the cottage.

We invite you to join us as we launch the Spring Collection and a very special Spring and Summer events program for 2023.

Tess Newman-Morris’s work as interior stylist and decorator needs little introduction. Spending time between the Macedon Ranges and her shack on Bruny Island, Tasmania, the long -time stylists’ ability to create warm spaces incorporating antiques and vintage has seen her work featured in many magazine publications. Tess has also worked alongside interior designers such as Adelaide Bragg and Charlotte Coote, and as the stylist of the perennially favourite Satellite Island in Tasmania. We are honoured to welcome Tess, who will be talking about her love and importance of incorporating antiques and vintage into your home.

Author and illustrator of ‘The Kitchen Garden’, Lucy Mora is also a gardener, artist and garden mapper and lives in a charming 1870s cottage in Newstead, Central Victoria with her husband and dog. It was there she discovered her love for growing produce and preserving. Her kitchen is lined with Fowlers jars of preserved fruits and vegetables reminiscent of her childhood. Lucy has transformed the 'mow and blow' garden she inherited into a garden full of vegetables, perennials and cornucopian charm.
‘The Kitchen Garden’ is a joyous guide to planting, growing and eating all year round, which makes it a special honour to welcome Lucy to O A K  L A N E & Co. to sign copies of her delightful garden and kitchen companion.

We look forward to welcoming you!
